At Canton Dental Associates in Baltimore, MD, we focus on prevention and patient education. We believe every patient should develop a proper oral hygiene routine to help improve the health of their teeth, minimize the chance of developing complex dental problems, and lower your risk of getting cavities. Many dental issues can be minimized if you properly clean your teeth. If the teeth aren’t properly cleaned, plaque can begin to develop. Plaque is bacteria that forms in the mouth when it isn’t properly cleaned. Plaque can stick to the tooth enamel, causing it to weaken over time and can even lead to the development of tooth decay and gum disease. Our team of experienced dentists at Canton Dental Associates have compiled a few tips and tricks to help minimize plaque and keep your smile bright and healthy.
Tips to Minimize Plaque
Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Brushing in the morning isn’t enough to eliminate bad bacteria in your mouth. Over the course of the day, you are eating and drinking which leads to a residue in the mouth that can lead to plaque if not properly removed. Make sure you brush your teeth after dinner so that the food particles and debris don’t stick to your teeth as you sleep. Spend at least two minutes properly brushing your teeth and tongue.
Don’t forget to floss. Plaque can develop in between your teeth if the bacteria between your teeth is not properly removed. Brushing alone can not reach all parts of the mouth. Flossing reaches the places in your mouth that brushing can not. Some people choose to floss after each meal and some people floss once in the morning and once at night.
Use mouthwash. Mouth wash is a great way to rinse out the left over food particles after you brush and floss. Find an ADA approved mouthwash to round out your oral hygiene routine.
Get regular professional tooth cleanings. Professional dental cleaning removes bacteria that normal brushing and flossing can not reach. One of our trusted dentists will be able to catch any dental issues early and give you the care you need. Visit Canton Dental Associates at least twice a year to receive a preventive care exam and professional dental cleaning.
